The short period in Lithuania which lasted from the end of June 1812 until the beginning of December of the same year is known as the French rule. At that time, the Grand Armee led by France invaded Russia, however, after failing to crush the country’s army it was forced to retreat the same way. Thus, Lithuania saw the Grand Armee as a powerful conqueror, and then later defeated and retreating.
